TOM O’GORMAN MAKES HISTORY

The Oxford -Cambridge chess match started in 1873 and has been played continuously since then with the exception of the war years. Only six players had achieved a 100% score with 4 wins from 4 games in the over 150 years history of the match prior to last Saturday’s 143rd match in London.

Tom O’Gorman smashed that record when he won his game on Board 1 for Oxford. He thus moves to 5 wins from 5 games and becomes the most successful player ever in the history of the match in terms of percentage score. No other player has ever achieved a 100% score from 5 games.

This is a phenomenal achievement, even more so in that all of Tom’s wins were secured on Board 1 where the best and toughest opponents are to be found. The club is extremely proud of Tom and of his latest feat. It comes at the end of a magnificent recent run of success for Tom where he became only the 11th player in the entire history of Irish chess to gain the International Master title and where he also achieved the best score on the Irish team in the Chess Olympiad.
